When, Not If

When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers. — Deuteronomy 6:10
I love this verse because it doesn’t say “if ” but “when.” Sometimes we say, “If I ever have a boyfriend, or if I ever make enough money, then I will be successful.” But the proper response is to ask Jesus “when.”
Here are three responses to take while waiting for “when” to happen. The first is surrender. There are desires I’ve longed for quite some time, and it’s hard for me to understand that today is not the day. When a bunch of todays and tomorrows go by, I tend to get anxious. I take things into my own hands. I step out in what I feel is faith, but it’s really a lack of trust that Jesus will do what he said he’ll do (see Psalm 37:5).
