Blessed with a Burden

Nehemiah was in Iran when he heard the news that Israel lay in ruins. He cried like a baby. There was nothing he could do but mourn for Israel. Once again, the wall had been broken down and its gates burned with fire (see Nehemiah 1:3).
Nehemiah began to ask for forgiveness on behalf of Israel and asked God for help. This little sentence explains his burden: “I was cupbearer to the king” (1:11).
If Nehemiah was found in low spirits by the king he served wine and spirits to, he could have been killed. Instead, the king showed favor. He said to Nehemiah, “What is it you want? . . . How long will your journey take, and when will you get back?” (2:4,6).
