The Dark Night
Series: Faithbook of Jesus Devotional
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning?
— Psalm 22:1
Have you ever had a really bad day? Nothing in the world seems right, and you think you’re dying? David wrote in Psalm 22, the darkest night of his life, that he was dying. He said to God, “Where the heck are you?”
I remember my mom used to tell me it’s darkest before the dawn. David thought he wasn’t going to make it, but he did. One chapter later he wrote the most beautiful and peaceful poem in the entire book of Psalms, which says, “The Lord is my shep- herd, I shall not be in want.”
David wasn’t exaggerating in Psalm 22. He was a hunted man. King Saul was not about to give up his throne to some young shepherd boy with no experience but herding sheep.
