When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”

The Israelites had just committed the unthinkable. They had broken their covenant with God to worship an idol in the shape of a cow. Wow, really? Tell me they didn’t do that.
After waiting for forty days with no leader, the Israelites got impatient and started partying, dancing, and singing (see Exodus 32:6,18-19). So long, God. Farewell, Moses. Hello, golden calf !
Moses was horrified when he saw this and broke the tablets of the Law. He burned the idol they had made, ground it to powder, mixed it in their water, and made the Israelites drink it (see Exodus 32:20). Go, Moses!
