The Lord said to Job: “Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who accuses God answer him!”

— Job 40:1-2

Telling someone off is like giving someone the finger. It means you’re mad and you want that person to know how you feel. In today’s passage the Lord is responding to Job’s monologue.

For those of you who don’t know, Job was a righteous and God-fearing man with a large family. He was very wealthy. In the first chapter of Job, Jesus was bragging about his servant Job. Satan asked to mess with Job, because why would Job fear God for nothing?

In a twenty-four-hour period Job lost everything. (Take that, Jack Bauer!) His wife told him to curse Jesus and die, but Job refused (see 2:9). Then Job’s friends told him off because they figured he must have done something to deserve his sufferings.
