''Contessa,'' Jimmy said softly as she looked up at him.
Susan excused herself quickly, amid the squeals she heard running up the walk from Christopher and Alexandra as they realized Uncle Jimmy was there. ''Children,'' she coaxed, ''come with me. Uncle Jimmy and your mother need to talk.''
''Ohhh,'' whined Alexandra. ''I want to see Uncle Jimmy!''
''Me too,'' echoed her brother.
''And you will,'' Susan said as she placed an arm around each, gently guiding them away from the house. ''But first we need to go, um, pick flowers! Yes, your mother has asked for those blue and yellow flowers by the river.'' She knew how much the children enjoyed frolicking there, so their attention was momentarily diverted.

He dropped his hand again as he struggled for the right words. ''It's just that she's so lost, you know, and I've always wanted to help her find her way.''
Contessa was listening attentively, so he tried to explain further. ''I guess I've thought it was a different love for a long time. I suppose I just never knew the difference.'' He looked into her eyes again before continuing. ''But then I met you.''
She took in a quick breath, afraid to move, afraid to hope for what he might mean. ''Contessa,'' he said as he moved even closer, their faces only inches apart now, ''I am in love with you. You are everything I've ever dreamed of but was afraid to think I'd ever find. I love you, and I love your children.''
''Jimmy,'' she began, ''please don't do this.'' She quickly noticed the pained look in his face, so she hurriedly continued. ''It's just that I don't think I can take more disappointment.''
He hated to see her in pain, but the distress he was feeling right at that m ...
