Esther 1

Well good morning.

Last night we talked about the beginning of the story of Esther. We leafed about King Xerxes and his extravagant lifestyle and parities. We learned what happened if anyone was brave enough to say no to him. Queen Vashti tries to oppose his mandate and where it gets her is banished from the kingdom forever.

And we talked about how we often have a King Xerxes in our life that is calling the shots. And we don't always realize it but that one person or thing or belief or whatever it is controls the outcome of our destiny. We talked about how this often surfaces in the form of our ''shoulds.'' Things that we feel as though we have to do because of the influence of our King Vashit. This weekend is all about calling and purpose but in order to dissever what those are in each of our very distinct and unique lives we have to first let go of our shoulds. We have to discern the voices in our lives that have somewhere along the way gained more weight and significance than the Lords.. To uncover our must -we have to release our shoulds.

I hope you had some time to reflect on what your shoulds are on who your King Xerxes is because the fact is live in a world who's values and culture often lead us in the opposite direction of where we want to be. Jesus came to give us life and life abundant John 10:10. And often our culture leads us away from the kind of abundant life Jesus came to give us not towards it. We live in the kingdom of this world but there is another kingdom at work within our midst. Jesus would also say the Kingdom of God is here. Meaning operating just beneath the surface is alternate reality. When we live out the teachings of Jesus, when we listen to the voice of God and ignore the voice of King Xerxes we find it, we bring it to surface, we put it at the forefront. And in this story we will find today that although King Xerxes is supposes ''king of kings'' and he believes he holds the power to control the destiny of his realm of influence there's a whole other ''King of Kings'' at work behind the scenes. This is why it's so fascinating that we don't find the name of God anywhere in this book, be we will find that just because it's not there in print in an obvious fashion doesn't mean He's not at work. If we're honest, we sense this, that feeling deep in the pit of our souls that says, ''There's got to be more than what this world has to offer'' We feel like that, because the fact is, there is more. And it's right in front of us, if we have eyes to see and ears to hear.

''If we only had eyes to see and ears to hear and wits to understand, we would know that the Kingdom of God in the sense of holiness, goodness, beauty is as close as breathing and is crying out to born both within ourselves and within the world; we would know that the Kingdom of God is what we all of us hunger for above all other things even when ...
