Luke 1:40-45

Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name, Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits (Psalm 103:1-2 NIV).

Let’s pick up where we left off. Mary has had an angelic encounter and responded to a message from the living God. Just like any of us would have done, she ran as quickly as possible to share the news with her girlfriend, or in this case, her cousin Elizabeth. Women have a tendency to want to share less earth shattering news than that with each other, and Mary was no exception. She made her way to the home of Elizabeth and Zechariah. Read Luke 1:39-45.

What word does Elizabeth use to describe Mary on three separate occasions?

When we people pleasers get that praise we long for, we ingest it and we gobble it up like we’ve never been on the receiving end of a compliment before. If I was Mary, and Elizabeth called me blessed over and over again, I might start thinking that the blessing must have something to do with me. Surely, this gift bestowed is a direct result of my considerably pure and chaste character. I might take that blessing and hoard it. Hi, my name is Christy, and I am a blessing hoarder.

How about you? Please tell me I’m not the only one that does this. Can you identify? Write your answer in the blank below.

But here is the thing about that word blessing. By definition, a blessing comes to us as the result of someone else’s actions. It is very difficult to bless yourself. Unless, of course, you are sneezing, in which case it is not only acceptable but also encouraged. A true ble ...
