Chapter Six: Finding Your Team
Series: In It Together
Jennifer Waddle

Remember the family-friendly movie from the 90s called Cool Runnings?

It was loosely based on Jamaica’s first Olympic Bobsled Team. Now, think about that for a minute. Jamaica…bobsledding…hmm…

The movie portrays four guys, who had never even seen snow, incurring the help of a formerly deposed Olympian, who had cheated his way to a gold medal.

Not only did they face extreme ridicule from the other teams, they struggled to come up with enough money to even enter the race and build a decent bobsled. However, through much trial and perseverance, the Jamaican Bobsled Team finally made it.

That movie is a great example of the camaraderie we’ve been learning about in this series, In It Together: Where Independence Meets Camaraderie. In the church, it’s imperative that we figure out how to work together and persevere to the end. But let’s face it ladies, the body struggles because it is made up of people. And where two or more are gathered, there is…well…trouble! But we cannot use that as an excuse to remove ourselves from the fellowship we were created to have with one another.

“Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.” (1 Peter 3:8-9 NKJV)

Be of one mind? Say what?! Most of us can’t even agree on what to sing on a Sunday morning. How can we ever follow Peter’s words to be of one mind, compassionate, and tenderhearted?

Now, in the movie, the Jamaican Bobsled Team didn’t start out getting along. And they certainly weren’t of the same mind. But they learned to work together for a purpose. And in the end, they were able to make it through the very worst of trials.

Our purpose, sisters, is to glorify God and edify the body, but I’d also like to add that we are to be a light in this dark world. If non-believers see us bickering and backbiting, why would they ever want to join us? We are representatives of Christ Jesus. What we do and say matters. How we get along matters.

At the end of Cool Runnings, (spoiler alert), the team’s bobsled had a catastrophic malfunction and crashed near the finish line. But even though they were injured and shaken, the team mustered the strength to carry their bobsled across the finish line as everyone cheered.

Now, I don’t know about you, but when things get tough, I would like to be one of those who picks up the bobsled and carries it across the finish line along with my brothers and sisters in Christ. I want to be one who perseveres through trials because the body of Christ is worth it!
