Series: The Sevenfold Holy Spirit

Isaiah 11:1-5

We've been studying the Holy Spirit this month, and today we're going to begin talking about the sevenfold Holy Spirit.

As we are getting to know the Holy Spirit, we have to understand that knowing Him is an infinite pursuit. God is infinite. No one title can ever completely display or describe everything He is. No one word or name can ever be good enough to demonstrate His entire nature. There is always more of Him to know!

But as we get to know Him, we cannot His infinitude hinder our hunger for Him. We know that His thoughts and His ways are as far above ours as the heavens are above the earth. Isaiah 55:8-9 tells us:

'For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,'' says the Lord. ''For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.''

But even though God, in His infinitude and majesty, is so far above us, that doesn't give us license not to seek Him.

Instead, we must seek to know Him in every way He has made it possible for us to know Him. For example:

  • He has revealed Himself to us as Father, so we must seek to know Him as our Father.
  • He has shown Himself to be our Healer, Provider, and Comforter, so we need to chase after Him and get to know Him in all those ways too (and many, many more).

And every time we get to know another aspect of His revealed nature, our faith grows.

Our faith isn't the only thing that grows, either. The power in our lives also grows because we allow more of HIM into our lives, and HE is our Strength and Power through the Holy Spirit.

Each time we get to know another part of His personality and nature, everything low and earthly becomes that much less in our estimation, and God gets bigger in our hearts.

So today we're going to begin to get to know the Holy Spirit as the Sevenfold Holy Spirit.

As we already discussed, the Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Godhead. (The other two Persons of the Godhead are God the Father and God's Son, Jesus Christ.) However, there are several references to the Holy Spirit in the Bible that contain specific, special titles or names for Him, showing that He demonstrates Himself in our lives in multiple ways.

To understand how this works, just think of the many names of Jesus, such as:

  • Emmanuel;
  • Root and Offspring of David;
  • Bright and Morning Star;
  • Healer;
  • Savior;
  • Wonderful Counselor;
  • Mighty God;
  • King of Kings; and many more.

When you call on Jesus, you may often find yourself calling on His name according to the aspect of His nature you need at ...
