Tonight I was on the couch unwinding from a long day at work. I planned an epic devotional about David dancing shamelessly and thought about how we, too, can just dance.

Then my phone rang. My friend Emanuel burst into tears (he’s a guy, so techni- cally he wasn’t crying). He went off about his life. He was unhappy. He felt drawn back into his old lifestyle of drinking and getting high. So we talked. We talked about how tough it is to have faith in Jesus after the initial feelings go away.

After I hung up the phone, my friend Tim texted me and said that his girlfriend broke up with him. I burst into his apartment (we’re neighbors) and listened to him talk about his depression and the anxiety of being alone.
