Return to me, for I have redeemed you.

— Isaiah 44:22

Throughout the Old Testament we see a common pattern. The Israelites were walk- ing in pursuit of holiness, and then suddenly they were pursuing their own happiness. Rebellion against the Lord was so common that at least thirty Bible verses show the Israelites returning to Jesus (see Your Faith section below).

I am just as guilty of this same sin. Every day I choose my own path and what suits me best. Thankfully, God the Father sent his only Son, Jesus, to die for our sins so that all of us could return to him. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

That doesn’t mean returning to him is easy. David wrote, “How long must I wres- tle with my thoughts and every day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me?” (Psalm 13:2).
