Now those who had been scattered by the persecution in connection with Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, telling the message only to Jews.

I never noticed the word scattered until my pastor pointed it out in a sermon last year. I probably skimmed over this passage because it was about killing. Stephen was the first Christian martyr.

After Jesus had been crucified, his disciples locked themselves in a room for fear they were next (see John 20:26). It wasn’t until Stephen’s death that they were forced to scatter. And he wasn’t even a hero. Stephen was picked to look after the old ladies. Full of the spirit of faith, Stephen distributed food.

You don’t have to be great in the kingdom or possess great faith to serve others. How many of you have worked at McDonald’s, Jack in the Box, or some other fast- food place? There’s no shame in that! But imagine being killed because you were such a great burger flipper. Now that’s weird.
