In April 2009 at the Miss USA Pageant, Carrie Prejean, Miss California and runner- up for Miss USA, was asked a question by judge Perez Hilton: “Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit? Why or why not?”

Carrie responded by saying, “I think it’s great that Americans can choose one or the other. We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage . . . In my country and my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anyone . . .”25 No offense? Her answer sparked a national controversy. She became the target of national media, including Perez Hilton, and ended up losing her crown. I believe (and so does Carrie) ...
