How can salt be effective if it never leaves the shaker? I’m sure you’ve met Christians who have lost contact with the outside world. All they do is attend church (at least three times weekly), listen only to Christian music, and have only Christian friends. There’s nothing wrong with those things, but avoiding contact with the world because of our own inadequacies is a sin.
That’s how the early church started. It’s nothing new, really. Sometimes we just get comfortable. The Jews were waiting for Jesus to come back. They weren’t comfortable though; they were afraid. They had been filled with the Holy Spirit (see Acts 1:8), but they didn’t have the motivation to get out there and change the world. God ended their plans to stay inside the holy huddle. He wanted them to be the salt.
