Session Six Study Guide: Stumbling Into Freedom

Before you begin responding to the questions in this session, please read chapter 10 in the book Becoming Myself.

Many years ago on a family vacation, my youngest son and I participated in a Dolphin Quest adventure. We were in a large tank with a few dolphins, and at the appointed time we had our picture taken next to the amazing mammal. We were even able to briefly touch its smooth, rubbery skin. It was fabulous.

Dolphins make me happy. When you see them zipping through the water, they look utterly delighted, as if they are the keepers of a joyous secret they would be only too happy to share.

This year, I received the gift of swimming in the ocean while surrounded by a pod of dolphins. Not three or five. Not in a tank. But twenty, thirty, fifty dolphins swimming in the wide blue Pacific. Not trained to perform, the dolphins were singing, gliding, and then leaping through the air with joy! They were spinner dolphins in family groups—mommies with their babies—and their beauty left me speechless. I am filled with holy wonder at the memory of it.

The first experience was amazing. The second experience was transcendent. Actually it was a taste of heaven when all things will be restored. (In heaven, please join me while I ride a winged horse, a beautiful lion, or perhaps a humpback whale!) The dolphins in the tank were glorious. The dolphins swimming freely were even more so. Being free is better. Always.

Quicken my heart and my mind in response to the nudges of your Spirit. I give you permission to take me wherever you want me to go. I am yours. Thank you that you have come to set me free. I pray to become increasingly free in your truth and love! In your Name. Amen.

2. Regarding personal freedom, do you feel you are as free as you would like to be?

Freedom from sin

Because of what Jesus has accomplished for us through his death, his resurrection, and his ascension, we can be so very free. It all begins here—with an internal choice to let Christ so invade our hearts that we cannot be held by any sort of bondage internally. We choose to love, to forgive; we choose not to fear; we choose life.

Could it be any clearer? Our old way of life was nailed to the cross with Christ, a decisive end to that sin-miserab ...
