Would You Like Some Joy With That?

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.

If I don’t preface the above verses with two words—“testing time”—I have failed to set the stage for the proper response to trials. We should consider it joy when we face trials.
Wait, what? I would be lying if I said it’s easy for me to respond to trials that way..Joy is not a natural reaction to pain. But isn’t pain our body’s natural defense to alert us to a problem so we can fix it and move on?
Trials produce perseverance. “Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” ( James 1:4). The answer to the question above is yes, trials make us stronger.
