David is one of the most written-about men in the Bible. A man after God’s own heart, he was the second king of Israel and was chosen by God through the prophet Samuel. In the above verse, David was talking with Nathan the prophet about his lament for God’s house (which remained in a tent) while he got to live in a palace (see 2 Samuel 7:2).
During the night, the word of the Lord came to Nathan, and the very next day he told David everything. Humbled by the Lord’s encouraging words (see 2 Samuel 7:8-16), David asked, “Who am I?” (2 Samuel 7:18).
